MAKO ROBOT ASSISTED KNEE REPLACEMENT

The following links provide information about MAKO robot assisted knee replacement surgery. In short, a preoperative CT scan using a specific MAKO protocol is required to plan the surgery. This planning process takes 1 - 1.5 hours. It is therefore preferable that the CT scan be done at least a week prior to allow adequate time for planning.

During surgery, a live assessment of the knee is performed and paired to the CT scan to provide a bespoke cutting plan for the knee replacement. The result: a more stable and natural feeling knee replacement with quicker recovery times and less postoperative pain. Unlike other robot systems, the MAKO robot uses haptic technology and virtual boundaries preventing accidental soft tissue trauma during the sawing process thereby reducing pain and ligament damage.
